Funeral services for Grace Britt Horner, 100, will be held on Tuesday, February 12, 2008 at 10:30AM at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, 203 N. Washington with Pastor Todd Britt officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery, Junction City. Visitation will be from 6:00PM – 8:00PM, Monday, February, 11, 2008 at the funeral home. Mrs. Horner passed away Thursday, February 7, 2008 at Valley View Professional Care Center. Memorials may be made to the Highland Cemetery Association and/or Prairiedale Cemetery, near Talmage, KS and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
She was the daughter of Joseph Edward and Carrie (Watt) Britt, born at the farm home south of Solomon, Kansas on March 21, 1907. In 1913 the Britt family moved to a farm west of Junction City where Grace attended the one room Spring Valley School then and later the Brookside School .
Franklin M. Horner and Grace Britt Horner were married January 26, 1928 in Junction City. They began housekeeping and lived north of Chapman where they attended the old Early Day Wesley Church. 12 years later they bought a creek bottom farm near Woodbine, Kansas and joined the Lyona Church, later transferring to the First United Methodist Church in Junction City.
Grace earned the title of Kansas Author after her poems and many stories were published. They were published under the heading, "A Time To Remember". She also received awards from the Famous Poet Society annual convention in Anaheim, California.
Due to her husband's health problems they left the farm. Grace worked at Cole's Store 5 years and later was employed at the Men's Store for 26 years, Deb's and Jim Weaver's and Tom's Store.
She was an active member of meetings, church bazaars and the Tuesday Prayer Group and also volunteered at museums on Thursday. Grace sang with the Troubadour group for 8 years, was a handcraft leader in the E.H.D. and made shell jewelry and possessed many talents with her crochet hook and quilting in her spare time
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband on May 20, 1976; her 3 sisters, Bessie Wenking, Lottie Crider and Pearl Smith; and 3 brothers, Charley, Melvin and Richard.
Survivors include nieces and nephews, Ella Mae Grasso, Maxine Marston, Donald Deines, Dennis Deines, Art Horner, Mable Walton, Pearl Lenhart, Todd and Trudy Britt, Rex D. Crider and Jim Horner.
