George E. Scharff
George E. Scharff, 59, of Junction City, died Saturday, May 23, 2015 at Geary Community Hospital. George was born August 30, 1955 in Long Island, New York, the son of George F. & Theresa (Shannon) Scharff. His father died when George was a child, and his mother then married Wilbur Black, who, along with George's mother, raised George.
George attended schools and graduated from high school in Long Island, NY, and immediately entered the U.S. Army, where he spent a 20 year career. George retired from the Army at Ft. Riley as a Staff Sergeant in the Military Police. After retirement, George worked at Ft. Riley as a civilian employee in the Ammunition Logistics Dept. George was instrumental in helping create the Sundown Salute in Junction City.
George was a member of St. Xavier Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus; and the Earl C. Gormley, Post # 45 of the American Legion.
George married Pae Suk Shin on December 27, 2003 in Junction City. She survives of the home. Other survivors include: a son, George F. Scharff and his wife Hannah, Topeka; and 2 grandchildren, Daymon Michael Xavier Scharff and Kayleigh Elyse Noel Scharff, both of Topeka; and Michael Schoeb and Angela Lewis, a nephew and niece that he help raise.
A Memorial Mass will be 1:00 p.m., Friday, May 29, 2015 at St. Xavier Catholic Church, with Fr. Kerry Ninemire presiding. Inurnment will follow at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery at Ft. Riley. The family will greet friends Thursday, May 28, 1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m., with a Rosary and Prayer Service at 3:30 p.m., all at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel. The family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Xavier Catholic Church, sent in care of Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, 203 N. Washington, Junction City, KS 66441.
