Gary D. Deitrick, 90, of Junction City, KS, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan, KS. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 24, 2020, at Fort Riley Cemetery. For those that would like to attend, please meet at the Johnson Funeral Home by 10:15 am. All cars will go in procession to cemetery. Pastor Ronnie Roberts will officiate. Memorial contributions are suggested to be given to ASPCA, Salvation Army or to the Friends of Animals in Junction City.

Gary was born January 15, 1930, in Junction City, KS, the son of Marvin and Elizabeth (Vetsch) Deitrick.

Gary grew up in Junction City, KS with his eleven siblings. He graduated from Junction City High School with the class of 1948. After graduating from high school, he went to work for Hubbard Construction Company before enlisting in the Air Force in 1950.

During his twenty one years of service in the Air Force, he served in Africa, Germany, Guam,Thailand and Vietnam. During his Air Force career, he was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal December 30, 1965, the Air Force Commendation First Oak Leaf Cluster August 17, 1966 and The Airman's Medal September 21, 1966. He retired from the United States Air Force in 1970.

After his retirement from the Air Force, he worked for R&R Developers as a painter. Gary was a very devoted and generous man. He donated to several charities including Muscular Dystrophy Association, Billy Graham, Disabled American Veterans and Easter Seals. Gary also sponsored several children through World Vision and saw several of his children graduate.

It was during Gary's first tour in Germany when he met and married his wife Helga on July 7, 1954.

Other survivors left to mourn his loss are four daughters, Charlotte Houser-Morehead of Junction City, KS, Sharon Boller (Dwight) of Junction City, KS, Mary Ann Day (Patrick) of Marysville, WA and Catherine Teidel (Rick) of Junction City, KS; ten grandchildren, Ryan Houser of Junction City, KS, Kelly Houser-Herron (Mick) of Junction City, KS, Tammi Bikowski (Craig) of Waldorf, MD, Jennifer Lawing (Don) of Gilcrest, CO, Christopher Day of Boise, ID, Patrick Day, JR. of Temecula, CA, Casey Harrison of Mobile, AL, Rachel Law (Clint) of Las Vegas, NV and Matthew Day of Temecula, CA, Brandon Deitrick of Junction City, KS; twenty four great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Helga on June 13, 1996, parents and his eleven siblings.
