Command Sergeant Major (Ret.) Foster H. George (92), formerly of Junction City and Fort Riley, Kansas, was called to his final duty station on March 1, 2010. Graveside inurnment services will be held at 10:30 am on March 29, 2010 at Fort Riley's Main Post Cemetery with military honors. Following the service, visitation with family will be at the Custer House, Fort Riley.
Foster Hull George was born March 8, 1917 in Pelham, New York to Harry Lee George and the former Mary Hull. The second of nine children, he grew up in Brooklyn, NY, graduated from high school and was drafted in 1943 by the United States Army. He proudly served his country for the next 30 years as a combat engineer with assignments at Ft. Dix, NJ; Ft. Belvoir, VA; Fort Lewis, WA; Michigan Tech University ROTC, Houghton, MI: and two tours in Germany. In addition, he deployed twice to Korea and once to Vietnam. After serving as CSM of the 138th Engineer Group at Fort Riley, Kansas, he retired in 1973 as a decorated Army veteran. Following retirement he worked for several years at Whitaker Cable Company in Junction City and at the Fort Riley Housing Division.
Foster married Gertrude (Trudy) Stanford in 1947 and celebrated 38 years of marriage before her death in 1985. After relocating to Bull Shoals, AR, he married Marguerite (Peg) Peterson in 1993. She preceded him in death in 1995. In 1998, he married Nancy Harman of Bull Shoals, AR who preceded him in death in 2005.
His life is celebrated by his five children: Stephen George of Wichita, Kansas; Harold (Howie) George of Hutchinson, Kansas; Sharon O'Neal of Lincoln, Nebraska; Marty Rombold and her husband, Peter, of Junction City, Kansas; and Elizabeth (Liz) George and her husband, Charlie Johnston, of Lewisville, Texas. Six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren survive. He is survived by his siblings Mary (Betty) Butler, Robert George, and Catherine Henderson. He was preceded in death by his siblings Patricia Faust, Harry Lee George, Jr., Angela Powell, Margaret Stiegerwald and Edward George. Many nieces and nephews survive.
CSM (Ret.) George is remembered by many for his wit, his smile, and his devotion to the U.S. Army. His soldiers, commanding officers and family were secure in knowing "CSM has your back." To all who knew his fondness for singing this song, for the many places he has roamed, over land and sea and foam, this soldier has been shown the way to go home.
