Florence Eloise Morris, 98, of Junction City, KS, passed away on December 27, 2018. A private vigil will take place at the Johnson Funeral Home officiated by Fr. Kyle Berens.
Florence was born on June 23, 1920, in Banes, Cuba to Percival and Kirine (Roswell) Nurse. Percival was born in Bridgetown, Barbados (1888) and was hired by the US Government in 1906 to work on the Panama Canal as an engineer. After working on the Canal he moved to Cuba where he met and married Kirine. Kirine was a homemaker. At the age of 12, Florence along with her family relocated to Jamaica. She spent her years there until adulthood. Errol and Claude, her sons were born on the beautiful island.
In 1961 with the goal of providing better opportunities for her family, Florence along with her sons moved to Brooklyn, New York. She worked in multiple jobs throughout her life to provide the utmost support and care for her boys. First, she was a nurse's aide at Bellvue Hospital in New York City helping wounded Vietnam Vets. Later, she transitioned her experience and knowledge of caring for others into home healthcare. Lastly, she worked for the International Ladies Garment Workers Union (ILGWU) from where she retired. Florence was a very skilled seamstress. Her mother had taught her when she was a girl. She made many of her own clothes as well as clothing for her sons, family, and friends.
Florence moved to Junction City, Kansas in 2006 where she became a member of St. Xavier Catholic Church. She was a woman of many talents and virtues: a dedicated caregiver, a master seamstress, a loving mother and grandmother, and a faithful friend. She loved to travel and always enjoyed taking a moment for a great cup of tea.
She will be dearly missed.
Florence is survived by her loving family: her sister, Helen Gowan of London, Eng; two sons, Errol Lee and daughter-in-law Ida Lee, Claude Lee and wife Merlene; her nine grandchildren, Amber Lee, Claude Lee and wife Keesha, Audrey Bell and husband Derrick, Joseph Lee, Natalie Lee, Florence Ewing and husband Rodney, Andrew Lee, Annette Lee, and Shatisha Coates; many adoring great-grandchildren; and host of loving family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Rupert Morris, and her siblings Cecil, Rupert, Vivian, Albert, Eric, Lloyd, and Lurline.
