Funeral services for Evelyn Sanders, 80, of Junction City will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 8, 2009 at Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel, 805 Caroline Avenue with Pastor Redo Purnell officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel. Mrs. Sanders passed away August 4, 2009 at Stormont-Vail Healthcare Center in Topeka, KS. Memorial contributions may be made to the Diabetes Association.
Evelyn was born September 6, 1928 in Hill House, Mississippi: the daughter of Willie B. Metts, (Deceased: 1980) and Emma McCray Metts, (Deceased: 1932). She attended schools in Mississippi, moved and worked as a hotel maid in Chicago, IL from 1950-1962.
Evelyn relocated to Junction City, KS in 1962, worked various jobs and was employed as the Head Housekeeper at the Downtowner Motor Inn. She continued employment at the Harvest Inn for fourteen years. During this time Evelyn was a member of United Methodist Church. She enjoyed gardening, planting flowers, her favorite passion was cooking and taking care of family and friends, her favorite past time was fishing.
Evelyn raised one nephew and several nieces as her own son and daughters.
She met and later married Walter Sanders Sr. August 10, 1985 in Junction City, KS. (He preceded her in death on June 5th, 2008). Also preceding her in death, two Sisters; Louise Emerson- Roselle, MS, Clara Belle Metts of South Carolina, one Brother; Willie Metts, Jr., of Peoria, IL.
Evelyn is survived by three Brothers; David Metts of Winston-Salem, N.C, John Metts of Chicago, IL, and Jimmy Metts of Camden, NJ, five Sisters; Willie Ella Penny of Peoria, IL, Shirley Metts of Peoria, IL, Geraldine Metts, of Peoria, IL, Rose Marie Metts of NJ, Mary Helen Metts of NC, and Evelyn's beloved Great Aunt; Minnie Smith of Davenport, Iowa.
Also surviving from Evelyn's Household, Bobby Taylor and wife, Sonia of Hickory Hills, IL, Margaret Morris and husband, Steve of Copperas Cove, TX, Robert Sanders(Johnnie) of Topeka, KS, Lisa Winters of Chicago, IL, Rebecca Jackson of Tuscaloosa, AL, Bobbie Ann Taylor of Cleveland, OH, Sandra Grant of Junction City, KS and Georgia Winters of Malden, MO. She is survived by a host of nephews, nieces, grand, great grandchildren, family and friends she truly loved.
