A funeral mass will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 24, 2007, at the St. Xavier Catholic Church for Eugene "Gene" W. Roberts, Jr., 78, Junction City. Father Al Brungardt will officiate. Cremation will follow the service with inurnment at a later date. A visitation will be from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Friday, November 23, 2007, at the Penwell-Gabel Johnson Funeral Chapel 203 N. Washington Sreet with a Vigil Service at 7:30 p.m. Mr. Roberts passed away Tuesday, November 20, 2007, at the Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be given to the Center for Basic Cancer Research KSU Foundation Center 2323 Anderson Suite 500 Manhattan, Kansas 66502-2911 or to the American Heart Association 5375 W. 7th Topeka, Kansas 66606.
Gene was born October 22, 1929, in Lincoln, Nebraska, the son of Eugene W. and Evelyn P. (Bryant) Roberts, Sr. He has lived in Junction City, Kansas since 1956.
Gene was a United States Army Veteran having served during the Korean Conflict. He worked as a printer for the Junction City Daily Union for 39 years. He was a member of the St. Xavier Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the American Legion Post #45 in Junction City.
He married Lois J. Johnson May 2, 1952, in Hanover, Kansas.
Survivors in include his wife Lois of the home in Junction City; two sons, William C. Roberts of Katy, Tx. and James L. Roberts of Kansas City, Mo; Five daughters, Beth Roberts of Sandwich, Ma; Debbie LaHolt of Lincoln, Ne; Mary Macklin of Olive Branch, Ms; Janel Roberts, Scottsdale, Az. and Sally Hamby of Highlands Ranch, Co. He is survived by two brothers, Robert Roberts of Wymore, Ne. and Melvin Roberts of Maysville, Ca; and two sisters, Marilyn Samuelson of Wymore, Ne. and Judy Humphrey of Odell, Ne. He is survived by five grandchildren, Morgan LaHolt, Spencer Macklin, Madison Roberts, Garrison Roberts and Nathan Hamby. He is survived by one great granddaughter, Ainsley LaHolt.
