Eugene Russell Ballard, 73, of Junction City passed away at his residence on July 30, 2012. Mr. Ballard was born to Donald and Nettie (Hittle) Ballard on August 6, 1938 in Gary, Indiana.

He married Martha "Pat" Elizabeth Thielbar September 26, 1959 she preceded him in death March 11, 2011.

He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Diana Dawn, his parents, two brothers, Ronald and Eddie and one sister Marge, one grandson, Steven Michael Herald and one great-granddaughter Nevaeh Lynn Herald.

He is survived by two daughters, Lora Herald of Hutchinson and Valerie (Tony) Coltharp of Manhattan, KS; two sons, Don (Tammy) Ballard of Junction City and Tony (Kelly) Ballard of Shawnee, KS, his sisters, Jeannette M. Sowder and Betty J. McClure both of FL, twelve grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Mr. Ballard joined the U S Army in 1956 earning the National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal (2nd OLC), Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w/one Silver Service Star and One Bronze Star, Air Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross w/Palm, Combat Infantry Badge and the Good Conduct Medal (6th Award) he retired October 31, 1977.

The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 2, 2012 at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, 203 N. Washington Street, Junction City, KS. Graveside services with full military honors will be held at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery, 5181 Wildcat Creek Rd., Manhattan, Kansas at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 3, 2012.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the American Heart Association, 5375 W. 7th, Topeka, KS 66606 and the American Diabetes Association, 10580 Barkley, Ste. 400, Overland Park, KS 66212.
