Funeral services for Ida Erma Kummer, 97, long-time rural Geary County, Kansas resident will be Friday, February 4, 2011 at 1:00 pm at the First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Matthew Glasgow officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, February 3, 2011 from 6-8 pm at the Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel, 805 Caroline Ave. Erma passed away on January 29, 2011 at Chapman Valley Manor after a long, tough battle with congestive heart failure.
Erma was born November 5, 1913 in Corbin, Kansas to Nancy and Walter Sutter, Sr. She attended Wakefield High School her Freshman, Junior and Senior years and Chapman High School her sophomore year. Erma married Philip Kummer on October 15, 1931. They spent their lives farming in Geary and Dickinson County. Philip preceded her in death on September 15, 1985.
Erma was a homemaker who was a good wife, mother, neighbor, and friend. She was a kind, gentle, caring person who always put others ahead of herself. She loved to cook, sew, garden, and really enjoyed planting and caring for her flowers.
Erma was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and Circle I and served on the Geary County Kansas election board for several years.
Survivors include her daughter, Betty Lewis and husband Stan of Chapman, KS one sister-in-law, Lavon Sutter of Olathe, KS and one brother-in-law, Theodore Kummer of Lawrence, KS.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Philip Kummer, her parents, Nancy and Walter Sutter, Sr., six sisters; Velma Bisel, ALice Adams, Viola Schaulis, Opal Gaston, Vineta Dodds and Norma Jean Schmanke and two brothers; Walter Sutter, Jr. and Duane Sutter.
