Funeral services for Elfriede B. Sanders, 85, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Episcopal Church of the Covenant at 4th and Adams in Junction City, Kansas followed by burial at Fort Riley Cemetery. No flowers please. The family is requesting memorials to the Geary Community Schools Foundation, 123 North Eisenhower Drive, Junction City, Kansas, or the Church of the Covenant Permanent Endowment Fund, Inc., 4th & Adams, Junction City, Kansas. Calling hours will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, February 5, at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, 203 N. Washington.
Elfriede was born June 4, 1923, to Willi and Anna Althaus in Reilingen, Germany. On November 21, 1953, she married Theodore F. Sanders. They had been married for 47 years at the time of his death on March 10, 2000. Elfriede began working for the Fort Riley Post Exchange in 1960 and at the time of her retirement in 1980, she was a Branch Manager. She was a member of the Church of the Covenant Episcopal and for 22 years, she and Ted taught the confirmation classes at the Church. Elfriede served on the Vestry and was the Treasurer of the Church. Elfriede volunteered as a pink lady at the Geary Community Hospital and for 12 years served on the Board of Trustees of the Hospital. On January 29, 1999, Ted and Elfriede were honored by the Geary County Democratic Party for being Democratic activists since the 1970's. Elfriede was past president and treasurer of the Geary County Democratic Women.
Elfriede is survived by a son, Theodore Vincent Sanders, and his wife, Geraldine, 6 grandsons, 24 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her beloved sister, Helga Northmann, nephews, Markus and Oliver Northmann and her cousin, Ilse Henninger and her daughter, Kerstin Mahr.
