Graveside services for MSG E-8 (Ret)U S Army, Edward R. Hakala,78, will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be tonight from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, 203 N. Washington Street. Mr.Hakala passed away February 28, 2010 at Geary Community Hospital.
Edward was born in Brantwood, WI on December 30, 1931.
He is survived by his wife Betty Jane (Nelson) Hakala and his children Duane Hakala, Beverly Hanson (Larry), Cindy Ullmer, Annette Krinhop (Greg), Cheryl Chopp, Steven Hakala, Alan Hakala (Linda), Brenda Schoendaller (Larry), thirteen grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren and one brother Phillip Hakala. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Eino Hakala and Vieno Ester (Luhtala) and one brother Raymond Hakala.
Edward's military service began on December 12, 1952, and he retired January 31, 1975. He served two tours in Korea and two in Viet Nam. After retiring from military service he was employed with Mobile Traveler and Fort Riley civil service as a small arms repairman.
