SFC (Ret) Earl F. Smith, 93, of Junction City, KS, passed away on Monday, October 26, 2015 at Abilene Memorial Hospital. A graveside service with full military honors will take place 2 p.m. Monday, November 2, 2015, at Fort Riley Cemetery. A visitation will take place 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. Monday prior to the graveside service at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Funeral Chapel 203 N. Washington Street. In order to attend the graveside service due to access restrictions, you must meet at the funeral home during visitation to follow procession to the cemetery.
Earl was born March 14, 1922, in Southgate, KY the son of Cecil F. and Lena Mae (Hopkins) Smith.
Earl served in the United States Army. He enlisted July 10, 1942. During his service time he served in World War II and the Korean Conflict. During that time he was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, American Theatre Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Ribbon with five bronze service stars and the Good Conduct Medal. He participated in the following Battles and Campaigns; Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. At the conclusion of his military career, he retired from Fort Riley, KS September 1, 1964 as SGT First Class.
After his retirement from the United States Army, he worked Civil Service at Irwin Army Community Hospital at Fort Riley as a custodian for several years.
He married Erna Hahn January 21, 1956 in Evansville, IN. She preceded him in death in 1997.
Survivors include two sons, Frank Smith and his wife Mary of Junction City, KS and Ellwood Smith and his wife Lisa of Saratoga Springs, NY; three daughters, Heidi Pratt and her husband Mike of Grangeville, SC, Monica Smith of Neosho, MO and Darlin Meyer and her husband Don of Bellefontaine, Ohio. He is also survived by three sisters, Rose Hamon of Houston, TX, Marie King of Tallahassee, FL and Lena Mae Sharp of Jackson, GA. He is survived by twelve grandchildren, twenty eight great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Howard, Cecil and Robert Smith; two sisters, Gladys Holt and Mary Smith; three grandchildren, Melissa, William and Austin Seay.
