Dr. Juanita Ladessa Oguinn Proutt, 85, passed away on June 6, 2014, at home, surrounded by her loving family. She was born March 30th, 1930, in Muskogee, Oklahoma. She was the sixth of eight children.
She worked hard throughout her life, earning her Doctorate of Psychology Degree. She worked for the Internal Revenue Service and Social Security, during that time she traveled throughout the United States.
She spent of her majority of her life in Alta Dena California and Las Vegas, Nevada.
She graduated from Manuel Training High School in 1947 with high honors. She earned her degree in Psychology while living in Alta Dena, California.
Among the many organizations that she belonged to, her favorite was the Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks and she was a member of the Holy Trinity African Methodist Episcopal Church in Las Vegas, NV.
After retiring her favorite hobbies were arts and crafts. She made many dolls and also designed and made her own clothing.
Juanita leaves behind to cherish her memory, her loving sister, Alla Mai Clark of Staten Island N.Y, nieces, Avis Clark of Staten Island N.Y., Linda Murphy (Willie) Junction City, Kansas, Ardette Phillips of Victorville, California, Tejuana Sallis of Fort Gibson, Oklahoma, Patricia Shenick of Minnesota, and Debra Smith-Bevier of Junction City, Kansas. Six nephews, Harold Smith, Tulsa Oklahoma, Johnny Smith, Howard Smith, Michael Smith of Junction City, Kansas, Byron Jones, Tulsa, Oklahoma and Richard Smith, Michigan. She also leaves a host of great, and great, great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Robert Proutt, a sister, Willie Mae Smith, brothers, Curtis, Roosevelt and Carl Jones; nephews, Silas and Russell Smith; nieces, Elaine Clark, Brenda Stewart and Lillie Smith.
She had no children of her own, but her love for children was always close to her heart as she cared for nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Friday, June 13, 2014, from 1:00 pm. to 2:00 pm. prior to the funeral service at the Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel, 805 Caroline Ave. Funeral services will be held to celebrate Juanita's life on at 2:00 p.m. following the visitation also at the funeral home Chapel. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery.
