A memorial service for Dr. Harry E. O' Donnell, 94, Junction City, will be 10 a.m. Friday, September 12, 2008, at the Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel, 805 Caroline Ave. A private family inurnment will take place at Highland Cemetery. Reverend Diana Stewart will officiate. Memorial contributions may be given to the Geary County Historical Society, 530 N. Adams Street or the Geary Community Hospital c/o Geary Community Health Care Foundation, P.O. Box 3015 both in Junction City, Kansas 66441.
Dr. O'Donnell was born July 5, 1914, Wilson, KS to Arthur E. and Estella (Bryant) O'Donnell. He attended the Junction City School District where he was part of the first kindergarten class he participated in school plays, broke school record hurdles and served as president of the Student Council. He graduated from Junction City High School class of 1932.
In 1936 he went to the University of Kansas for his pre-medicine classes, in his second year there 1937, he met Margaret Louise Large at Snow Hall during their Biological Science Classes, from 1938 to 1942 he went to Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia and before graduating he married Margaret on September 7, 1941 at Protection, KS.
In 1943 he returned to Junction City where he practiced medicine with his Father, Dr. Art O'Donnell and his Uncle Dr. Fred O'Donnell. He joined the U S Navy in 1944 where he served as the ship doctor on the USS Sumner for two years. He then returned to Junction City in 1946 and practiced medicine until 1984, age 70. He and Margaret were married for 56 years before her passing in 1997.
He is survived by his children three children; Margaret Shannon Mills and her husband Galen of Cincinnati, OH, Arthur Fredrick O' Donnell of Overland Park, KS and Michael Shaun O' Donnell and his wife Sharon of Oklahoma City, OK, one grandchild; Aaron O' Donnell and his wife Sarah of Arkansas City, KS and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Doris Balson of St. Louis, one brother, Art O' Donnell of Kansas City, MO.
