Born on September 21, 1947 in Herington, KS, Doug was the only child of Elmer Clifton Riffel and Leona Esther(Hamm) Riffel, who owned and operated the White City Meat Locker for many years. Having lived most of his childhood on a farm, Doug took great pride in raising and showing cattle for 4-H during his teenage years.
After earning a bachelor's degree from Emporia State University and a master's degree from Kansas State University, he worked as a meat inspector for the State of Kansas. He married Patricia Ann Rader on December 27, 1975. The couple moved to Loveland, CO, and then in the early 1980s, pursuing their careers at Hewlett-Packard, they moved to Snohomish, WA, where he and Pat adopted two sons.
Doug took advantage of the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest,
running 10 K races and marathons, and fishing and hiking with his sons in the Cascade mountains. After working as a buyer for The Boeing Company in Everett, WA, Doug moved to Bellingham, WA for a number of years before returning to his native Kansas and working for the Junction City Parks Department. Doug will always be remembered for his good nature and love of the outdoors.
Preceded in death by his parents, Doug is survived by his sons Casey Riffel, of Los Angeles, CA; and Sean Riffel, of Mountlake Terrace, WA; his former wife Patricia, of Lake Stevens, WA; and an extended family that includes a large number of relatives and friends.
His ashes will be scattered by his sons in KS, as well in the mountains of Washington State and on the beaches of the Pacific Ocean.
