Doug was born April 5, 1960, in Junction City, Kansas, to Gary and Mary Devin. He attended Geary County Schools, graduating in 1978 and Emporia State University. From early on Doug's interests were music and sports. He was actively involved in both. Doug grew up organizing neighborhood football, basketball and baseball games and was at all times the official rules-maker and referee. His favorite pastime was playing golf with friends and family. In elementary school he spent every day possible playing with his grandfather and his friends on the sand greens at the JC Municipal golf course. Doug enjoyed the competition of playing in area tournaments and the camaraderie of his golf groups. He was a lifelong avid Jayhawk fan and for many years hosted March Madness watch parties.
Doug's music connections also began early. He earned money to purchase his first drum by working in the lunchroom when he was in elementary school. (He was a school volunteer but was rewarded for his work by his parents.) Doug was a drummer in the JCHS band and in various other performing groups. He enjoyed entertaining others and loved his stint as a drummer with Whiskey Point, a favorite local group comprised mostly of family members. He was always willing to share his drumming expertise with beginners including his brother Dan, other family members and friends. Doug relished any opportunity to get together with his brothers and friends. He was often the life of the party because he wanted those around him to be happy.
Doug was a caring, kind person, always willing to help out whether it was an old friend or a new friend he just met. Doug spent several years working with the community self-help projects for the city and continued helping families find homes as a realtor. Doug was preceded in death by his father, Gary Devin. He is survived by his daughter Adrian of Houston, son Dustin (Latasha) of Colorado, granddaughter Kambree Adams and grandson Cole Adams of Houston, his mother Mary of Junction City; brothers Andy (JoAnn) and Dan (Samrie) of Lawrence and Mark of Junction City, his grandmother Vena Devin Rowbotham of Junction City; his special friend Lois, and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Doug was a transplant donor and his gifts to others will enrich and extend lives. A close friend commented that Doug is the best kind of donor; he had the biggest heart, always willing to help others. He will be greatly missed by his family and his many friends.
