A Memorial Mass for Douglas D. Engstrom, 61, Junction City will be held at 10:30 am Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at St. Xavier's Catholic Church with Father Al Brungardt and Father Kerry Ninemire officiating. A Vigil service will be held at 7:30pm Monday, April 6, 2009 at St. Xavier's Catholic Church, 218 North Washington, Junction City, KS. Doug passed away at his home Friday, April 3, 2009. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rob Smith Memorial Scholarship fund to Carolyn or Bill Cook or to Home Healthcare and Hospice Foundation, PO Box 3015, Junction City, KS. Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel is assisting the family with cremation arrangements.
Douglas was born June 25, 1947 in Junction City. He married his high school sweetheart Gloria Zschach on July 30, 1977. During his life, he taught at Junction City High School, fort Riley Middle School and Lucky High School in Manhattan. Doug graduated from Kansas State University with a BS and also received a Masters in Education from Kansas State University. Before that, he served in the United States Marine Corps from 1966 to 1969, and was stationed in Vietnam for much of this time.
Doug's most important accomplishment in life was the many friendships he cultivated and cherished. He had a deep and abiding love for his family, liberal politics, Bluejay athletics, and KU basketball (in that order).
He is survived by his wife Gloria, his daughter, Sarah Price Probert, lake Tahoe, NV, his son, Jeff Engstrom, Chicago, IL, his brother Terry Engstrom, Concord, NC, three sisters, Carolyn Cook, Junction City, KS, Pippy Engstrom, Manhattan, KS and Barbie Engstrom, Fort Collins, CO and his dog Zelda Engstrom.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Kathryn Engstrom both of Junction City and his dog, Rascal Engstrom.
