Services for Douglas Bernard Barksdale, Jr., 77, of Junction City will be Saturday, November 22, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel. Rev. Dr. Joe Belardo will officiate. Visitation will be Friday, November 21, 2003, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery. Mr. Barksdale died on November 9, 2003 in Concord, CA. Memorial Contributions may be given to the VFW Post #8773, P.O. Box 286, Junction City, KS 66441.
Douglas was born September 21, 1926, Dover, Delaware to Douglas and Pauline Mary (Gray) Barksdale Sr. He was the oldest of six children and was proud to say that he was the son of a Buffalo Soldier from the 9th Calvary. He was employed as a draftsman at Fort Riley. He was a dedicated civil service employee at Fort Riley for approximately 40 years and retired in 1991. He was a loyal Wal-Mart employee for 27 years, and was employed with Wal-mart until the time of his recent illness.
Douglas was previously married to Odeaner (Summerville) in which they had four children. He later married Kazuko in 1984 and joyfully gained four step-children.
He is survived by his wife Kazuko of Junction City, two sons; Norman C. Barksdale of Memphis, TN, Frederick A. Barksdale of Cedar Hills, TX, one daughter; Lorraine (Barksdale) Sawyer of Ithica, NY, one step-son; Kenneth Mewborn of Vacaville, CA, three step-daughters; Phyllis Ross of Salina, KS, Donna Anderson of Altadena, CA and Lori Brown of Long Beach, CA, two sisters; Patricia Herron of Junction City, and Greta Chism of North Highlands, CA and twenty four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one son; Douglas Orville Barksdale .
Pallbearers will be McKinley Smith, Phil Irby, Eddie Wilcher, William Carter, Samuel Kilpatrick and Gerry Greer.
