Dorothy K. Barr of Junction City, Kansas passed away Friday, January 9, 2009 at Valley View Care Center. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 14th at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 804 N. Jefferson, Junction City, Kansas, followed by a graveside dedication at Highland Cemetery. Reverend Gerald Martin will be officiating. Visitation will be held preceding the funeral service at 1:00 at the First United Methodist Church. All are welcome to join Dorothy's family in the church parlor for fellowship.
Dorothy Kathryn (Carson) Barr was born in Lafayette, Colorado on June 29, 1917 to William Lafayette Carson and Mabel May (Bemis) Carson. In two year increments following her birth, she was joined by sister Bessie (Carson) Brookover and two brothers, Bill and John Carson. In 1926, following the death of her father, Dorothy, with her mother and siblings, went to live at her maternal grandparents' home in Greenwood County, Kansas. After graduating from Severy High School as class valedictorian in 1935, she earned her teaching certificate. She began her teaching career at Fall River Grade School (Fall River, Kansas) in the fall of 1935. On October 2, 1942, Dorothy married Richard Weldon Barr of Humboldt, Kansas. Daughter Kathryn Ann (Barr) DePew was born in 1944 in Joplin, Missouri.
Dorothy earned her Bachelor's degree in education in 1954, her Master's degree in education in 1957 and a Specialist in Education Degree in 1971. In 1957 she moved with her husband and daughter to Junction City, Kansas where she taught at Morris Hill School. Dorothy began teaching fifth grade at Westwood School in 1958, where she taught for thirty-two years before retiring in 1990.
After retiring from teaching in 1990, Dorothy earned her certification as a nurses' aide and home health aide. She was employed as a home health aide and cared for clients in their homes until she retired in 1994.
She is survived by husband Richard Barr, daughter Kathryn DePew, son-in-law Gary DePew, granddaughter Julie Rasmussen, grandson Gary Brian DePew, granddaughter-in-law Jill Martinson, great-granddaughter Taylor Rasmussen, brother, Bill Carson, and many beloved extended family members.
Memorial gifts may be given to the First United Methodist Church, 804 N. Jefferson or to the Westwood Elementary School, 1600 N. Eisenhower Dr. both of Junction City, KS 66441
