Funeral services for Dorothy I. Johnson, 90, of Junction City, will be Friday, March 11, 2011 at 10 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Matthew Glasgow officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, March 10, 2011 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, 203 N. Washington Street. Mrs. Johnson passed away at her residence on March 7, 2011. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to Home Care and Hospice, c/o Geary Community Health Care Foundation, P.O. Box 3015, Junction City, KS 66441.
Dorothy was born on Dec 31, 1920 in Overbrook, Kansas to George Porter and Margaret Irene (Sutter) Hart. She graduated from Overbrook Rural School in 1938 and then received her teaching certificate from Emporia State University. She taught school for 1 year at Twin Mounds Country School in Douglas County, 3 years at Cottonwood Falls, KS. She moved to Junction City in 1942 and was teaching 3rd grade at Washington Elementary when she married Daniel Max Johnson June 13, 1948, Overbrook, KS she continued teaching until 1949.
Dorothy was an active member of First Presbyterian Church and had served as a deacon and elder, she was a member of the Ladies Reading Club, charter member of the Geary Community Hospital Pink Ladies Auxiliary and had served as secretary and past president, she served on the Geary Community Hospital Advisory Board and beginning in 1950 she began her volunteer service for the Red Cross Blood Mobile and did so for over 40 years.
She was also a member of the Geary County Republican Women and the Trooper Ladies. Dorothy consistently attended the Fort Riley Troop Deployment and Redeployment ceremonies and baked a countless number of cookies over the years for the troops. In 2008 she received the Bronze Pin and Presidential Service Certificate from President George W. Bush for over 4,000 hours of volunteer service to her community and she also received the Distinguished Auxiliaries Award for over 49 years as an active member. She was an avid sports fan and most of all she loved to watch the KU Jayhawks play.
She is survived by her son, Stevan Max Johnson of Corpus Christi, TX, her niece, Gloria Marcus and husband George of Junction City, KS, granddaughter, Kimberly A. Benge, grandson, Daniel J. Johnson, two great-grandchildren, Ryan M. Benge and Ross Benge and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her son, Kim Hart Johnson July 22, 1969 her husband Daniel "Max" Johnson Jan. 31, 1984, one brother, George P. Hart, Jr., two sisters, Margaret "Peggy" McMeen and Eleanor "Sally" Wharton and most recently her sister-in-law, Dorene Hart.
