Donna Maree Gelvin, 84, of Junction City, KS passed away on September 4, 2015, after a short period of declining health, surrounded by her family at the Kansas City Hospice House.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 PM Tuesday, September 8th, at Penwell-Gabel/Johnson Funeral Chapel, 203 North Washington. The funeral service will be held at 10 AM Wednesday, September 9th, at The First Presbyterian Church, 113 West 5th Street. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery.
Donna was born in Wichita, KS on August 3, 1931. She graduated from Salina High School and continued on to receive a B.S. in Education from Wichita State University. She was married to Thomas Gelvin in Wichita on May 15, 1955; they celebrated 60 years of that union in May of this year, with a reception of family and lifelong friends.
Donna worked briefly as a teacher in Denver, CO before marrying Tom. The family moved to Junction City in 1970, after living in Pittsburg and Clay Center, KS for a number of years. She was a realtor for Hoyle Real Estate firm once her children went to college. Her vast interest in the Junction City community included The First Presbyterian Church, PEO, Reading Club, Junction City Little Theater, Chairwoman of the Geary County Republican Women, and Friends of Animals. Donna enjoyed snow skiing and mountain hiking with her family and friends in Colorado. She loved boating, fishing, water skiing, golf and tennis. After retiring she traveled with family extensively throughout the US and overseas, and often with her bridge and Mahjongg friends. Donna's greatest pleasure in life came from her family. She enjoyed sharing life's many experiences with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Donna is survived by her husband, Thomas of Junction City; her son Jeffrey (Karen) of Overland Park, KS, daughter Karen Kiefer (Larry) of Olathe, KS, and daughter Kathy Mayer (Doug) of Overland Park, KS; five grandchildren, Emily Finlason (Mike), Heath Gelvin, Courtney Raupp (Michael), Melissa Mayer and Kyle Mayer; and six great grandchildren. Donna is preceded in death by her parents, Lester and Gwendolyn Cravens.
