Funeral services for Derris Faye Stewart, 49, Junction City, will be 11 a.m. Friday, February 20, 2009, at Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Funeral Chapel, 805 Caroline Ave. Pastor James E. Johnson will officiate. Burial will follow the service at Highland Cemetery. A visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Derris passed away on February 15, 2009 at Geary Community Hospital. Memorial contributions may be given to the Stewart Children's memorial fund c/o Central National Bank.
Derris was born December 6, 1959, in Clarksburg, West Virginia the daughter of William and Roberta (Wilkinson) Rickert.
Roberta Rickert later married Earl Stewart and the U.S. Army moved the family to Fort Riley, Kansas. Derris attended Fort Riley Elementary School and Junior High Schools. She graduated from Junction City High School in 1978. She worked as a child care provider and volunteered her time at the schools where her children attended. She also was involved with the Girl Scouts and various community activities. She loved to cook and always looked for ways to help others.
Derris is survived by four daughters, Tobette and her husband Jason of Columbus, GA; Rishonda of Las Vegas, NV; Ashley and Dacia of the home in Junction City. She is survived by her three sisters, Sonya Baker and husband David of Muskogee, OK; L'Tanya Pugh of Junction City, KS. and Daphne Maxwell and husband Marvin of Junction City, KS and her grandmother Margaret J. Rickert of Erie, PA; one grandson, Damon of Las Vegas, NV, three nephews, Jermaine Pugh of Leavenworth, KS; Stefan Pugh and Mardell Maxwell of Manhattan, KS
She was preceded in death by her father, mother, step father, brother, maternal grandparents and paternal grandfather.
