Delbert G. Stone, Sr., 88, of Junction City, passed away on Thursday, June 26th at Geary County Community Hospital.
He was the son of the late Charles and Ruth Stone and was born February 27, 1926 in Parkerville, KS. He graduated from Parkerville High School in 1942. Delbert married the love of his life, Mary J. Stone (Mollie) in Cottonwood Falls, KS on December 11, 1943.
Delbert was a kind and humble man who lived his faith quietly, loved his family unconditionally and was the first to help someone in need. He proudly served his country during World War II as a part of the 1st Marine Division, 7th Regiment, C Company and was wounded on the island of Okinawa in April, 1945. He graduated from the University of Kansas in 1950 and was a life-long Jayhawk. After graduating from KU, he and Mollie moved their young family to Overland Park, Ks where they raised their four daughters. Delbert retired from Yellow Freight in 1976 and moved to White City, Ks., where he and Mollie raised their granddaughter, Marlys (Lindsly) Shulda. Never one to give up, he went on to retire from Civil Service at Ft. Riley and retired again from Walmart, where he cheerfully greeted customers for fourteen years. Delbert and Mollie moved to Junction City in 2005.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his beautiful bride Mollie (2010), their infant son, Delbert G. Stone, Jr. (1946) and one sister, Charlene Read.
He leaves to mourn his passing four daughters: Mary Ann Sawyer, Junction City, Stephanne Zale, Overland Park, KS, Deborah Scoggins, Junction City, Rebecca Leonard, Topeka, KS and his granddaughter, Marlys (Brian) Shulda, Shawnee, KS. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Delbert was a Marine, a Mason, a member of Parkerville Baptist Church, a member of Alpha Kappa Psi (Business Fraternity, KU) and a life time member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
