Funeral services for Dean Robert Cassity, 91, of Junction City will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, October 28, 2011 at the First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Matthew Glasgow officiating, burial will follow at Highland cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, October 27, 2011 at Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel, 805 Caroline Avenue. Mr. Cassity passed away at Geary Community Hospital on October 22, 2011. Memorial contributions have been designated to the First Presbyterian Church, 113 W. 5th Street, Junction City, Kansas 66441.
Dean was born February 27, 1920, in Clifton, Kansas the son of Floyd Dewitt and Cora Elizabeth (Smutz) Cassity. Dean graduated from Clifton High School in 1937 and from Kansas State University in 1942 with a degree in horticulture. He served in the United States Navy during World War II being discharged in 1946 as a Lieutenant.
Dean moved to Junction City in 1947 and was the co-owner of the Junction City Floral Company until 1957. He later owned the Cassity Insurance Company from 1957 until 1971. Dean's passion for flowers brought him back to the horticulture industry working as a floral designer for a local florist for seventeen years before he retired.
Dean was a member of the First Presbyterian Church; Union Lodge #7; Melita Chapter of the O.E.S; American Legion; Royal Arch Masons Chapter #17; served on the board of the Jellison Benevolent Society; served on the board for the Y.M.C.A. and the Noon Lions Club where he served two years as President and twenty two years as Secretary.
He married Dorothy J. Jellison June 17, 1948, in Junction City, Kansas. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include one son, Arthur D. Cassity of Blue Springs, MO, one daughter, Erin Lea Cassity-Hales of Corpus Christi, TX and one sister, Esther "Pat" Reid of Bella Vista, AR. He is also survived by four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, infant Sara Elizabeth Cassity and Margaret B. Nelson in 1986.
Pallbearers will be Ted Hayden, Duane Blythe, Jim Reid, David Wietman, Sierra Wakefield and Christian Jackson.
