A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 12, 2015, at the Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel for Curtis Doss, Sr. A visitation will be held from 10 -11:00 a.m. Tuesday, prior to the funeral service at the Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel located at 805 Caroline Ave. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Disabled American Veterans Pearl Harbor Chapter 16, 720 McClure Street, Junction City, KS 66441.
Curtis Doss, Sr. was born February 23, 1928 in Emerson Arkansas. At the age of 19, he enlisted in the United States Army and served 21 years, ultimately achieving the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3. In 1952, he married Abiatha Bynum who preceded him in death in 2007. During his tenure in the U S Army, he fought in Korea and served 3 tours of duty in Germany. The first tour of duty was in 1952 after his son Cyril was born. While in Mainz, Germany, his second son, Curtis, Jr. was born. The family returned to the United States in 1957. Mr. Doss was stationed at Fort Sill/Lawton, Oklahoma where his daughter Cynthia was born. The family returned to Germany and his daughter, Renate was born in 1959 in Nurnberg. After returning to the states for four years, the family moved to Kaiserslautern, Germany for Mr. Doss's final tour of overseas duty.
Upon retiring from the US Army in 1968, Mr. Doss earned his Bachelor's Degree, his Master's Degree and with a teaching credential. He initially taught auto mechanics to servicemen transitioning out of the US Army. He later went on to teach auto mechanics at Junction City High School.
Mr. Doss was an active congregant at Church of Our Savior United Methodist, and an active member of the Lions Club International, and Disabled American Veterans for which he served as a Past Department Commander for the State of Kansas.
Mr. Doss is survived by his son Cyril of Dassel, Minnesota; his daughter Cynthia of Buena Park, California; and his daughter Renate of Katy Texas.
