David was born January 24, 1942 in The Dalles, OR to Leon & Hazel (late) (Davidson) Hubbard. The oldest of four, David grew up learning about agriculture and gardening, a hobby he sustained and enjoyed throughout his life. A graduate of Gresham High School, David joined the U.S. Army in 1960.
An intelligence specialist, David met his beautiful wife Sherry Holstead while stationed at Goodfellow AFB, Texas and they married on his birthday January 24, 1969 in Sweetwater, TX.

While stationed in Germany, they started their family and together raised three children. David is survived by his children: Peter Hubbard (wife Gina Oliver, Kansas City, MO), Christina Smith (husband Jeffery Smith and three children, Colorado Springs, CO) and Richard Hubbard (wife Jenny Prospal and three children, Jacksonville, FL), his father Leon Veril Hubbard of Salem, OR, brothers; William Hubbard (wife Berit, Haugesund, Norway), Gordon Hubbard (wife Karen, Portland, OR) and his sister, Sharleen Tindleland of Haugesund, Norway.

In 1977, David and Sherry moved to the Fort Riley and Junction City area and have been area residents since. David's passion for his community and its youth showed through his years as Scout Master of Chapman's Boy Scout Troop 48 in the late 1980's to early 1990's.

Prior to retiring he served two years as Command Sergeant Major of the 101st M.I. Battalion, 1st Infantry Division. A decorated Vietnam Veteran, David was awarded numerous awards and medals. After his Army career ended, David worked 20 years at the Fort Riley Physical Security office, retiring in 2006.

His passions outside of his professional life included traveling with Sherry, being a wonderful grandfather to his grandchildren, and education of and sharing the art form of square dancing with others. David and Sherry recently resigned from their positions as Presidents of the National Executive Committee of the National Square Dance Convention due to David's illness. To their credit, Wichita, Kansas hosted the 59th Nationwide Square Dance Conventions June of 2008 that was attended by 6,000 fellow national square dancers.
