Cpt. (Retired) Ronald Dean Ries, 74, of Junction City, Kansas, passed away on December 31, 2016. Dove Cremation and Funeral Service of Junction City, Kansas, is assisting the family with burial arrangements.
A Graveside Service with Military Honors will be held on Monday, January 9, 2017, at 1:00pm at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery, 5181 Wildcat Creek Rd., Manhattan, Kansas 66503.

Ron was born on March 12, 1942, in Atkinson, Nebraska to Edward and Eileen (Traner) Ries. As a young boy he was active in the Cub Scouts. As he grew older, he transitioned to the Boy Scouts Troop #180. After his graduation from St. Joseph High School in Atkinson, Nebraska, he joined the United States Air Force. He met Ruth Anne Reed on a blind date during her college time in Nebraska. He always told her, "I have been blind ever since". On May 22, 1965 they married over the phone while he was deployed to Italy, and she was in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. After proudly serving in the Air Force for 4 years, he transferred to the Army in 1968. He retired at Fort Riley on January 1, 1990, and lived in Junction City with his wife, Ruth Anne, ever since.
His many military awards and decorations include: The National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award, Army Achievement Medal with 2nd Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with 3rd Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman Badge, Overseas Service Ribbon "1", Meritorious Unit Citation, Civil Actions Honor Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, Good Conduct Medal (5th Award), Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and Expert (M-16A1 Rifle).
Ron had taken several self-study, correspondence, and night classes while in the military. Through his commitment to learning, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Kansas State University in 1984. His other achievements include his study in the martial art of Judo while in Vietnam and a pilot's license for small engine aircraft earned in Junction City, Kansas. Ron also received the distinguished Silver Beaver Award in 1991 from the Boy Scouts of America.
He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America with the Coronado Area Council where he worked with scouting leaders in training and education programs to develop leadership and mentorship for young scouts. Ron was also a proud member of the American Legion Post# 0045 of Junction City, Kansas.
Ron is survived by his loving family: Wife, Ruth Anne Ries of Junction City, KS; Sons, Michael Ries of Los Angeles, CA, and Scott (Alexis) Ries of Sydney, Australia; Grandson, Charlie Andrew Ries of Sydney, Australia; and Sister, Marge (Ries) Stracke, and husband Mel, of Stuart, NE; and a host of extended family.
He was preceded in death by his Parents, Edward and Eileen Ries and Brother Dennis Ries.
