Funeral services for Connie Grant, 79, of Junction City will be Thursday, February 23, 2006, 11 a.m. at the Second Missionary Baptist Church with Reverend Audrey Toombs officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. Visitation will be held Wednesday, February 22, 2006, 6-8 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel, 805 Caroline Avenue. Mrs. Grant passed away February 17, 2006 at Geary Community Hospital. Mrs. Grant was born May 5, 1926, Omaha, TX to John D. and Ophelia (Young) Oakry. She married Denivel Grant, Sr. in 1942, Omaha, TX , they then moved to Junction City. Mrs. Grant was a homemaker following her retirement from Civil Service working at the Quartermaster Laundry, Fort Riley, KS. She was a member of the Second Missionary Baptist Church where she had also served as an usher and was a member of the Darcus Mission Circle.
She is survived by three sons, William J. Wilson and wife, Deitra of Kansas City, MO, Jimmy Grant of Junction City, KS, and Tyrone S. Grant and wife, Justine of Manhattan, KS, five daughters, Carolyn Grant, Donna R. Brown and husband, Nellcine and LaVerne Lucas and husband Troy all of Junction City, Trixie Grant of Wichita, KS and Cathy S. Carthen of Atlanta, GA, three sisters, Marcelle Adams and Tommie Ashley both of Junction City and Gladeen Richardson of Berkeley, CA, fourteen Grandchildren and five Great-Grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Denivel Grant, Sr. June 6, 1990, one son, Denivel Grant, Jr., February 21, 2005, three brothers, A. D. Oakry, Ulysses Oakry and John D. Oakry her twin brother and one sister, Mozell Oakry.
Pallbearers will be Verlin Tarver, Ricky Jefferson, Troy Lucas, Thomas Oakley, Chris Reed and Eric Grant.
Musicians will be Sister Crystal Nelson and Sister Francis Clark
