A Remembrance gathering for COL (Ret) John "Fred" Hepler, 58, of Junction City, KS will be held Monday, March 3, 2003 at 6:00 p.m., at Main Post Chapel, Fort Riley, KS. Fred died February 24, 2003 at Geary Community Hospital. Inurnment burial will be Tuesday, March 4, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at Fort Riley Cemetery, Fort Riley, KS with full military honors, Military Chaplain Jim Paulson will officiate. of flowers to the American Cancer Society, 1315 SW Arrowhead Road,Topeka, KS 66604. Fred was born January 19, 1945, Norfolk, VA to J. Fred and Agnes (Buckmaster) Hepler, II. He received his Bachelor's at Pennsylvania Military College and his Masters in Public Relations at the University of Missouri Kansas City. He married Dianne Gersty in 1969, she survives of the home. Fred served in the United States Army for 28 years, he received the Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Southwest Asia Service Medal with Three Bronze Stars, Kuwait Liberation Medal, Parachutist Badge,Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal 1st OLC, Meritorious Service Medal 4th OLC, Army Commendation Medal 2nd OLC, Air Medal, National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon "2", Combat Infantryman Badge,Vietnam Service Medal with 1 Silver Star. He served as Chief of Staff at Fort Riley, KS
from 1990-1992, and as Garrison Commander, 1992-1994, following his retirement from the Army he became City Manager of Junction City, KS for 4 years. He was a mbmer of The Retired Officers Association and Old Troopers Regiment,Association United States Army and the Society of 1st Infantry Division. He is survived by his Mother; Agnes Hepler of Schwenksville, PA, Two Daughters: Michelle Pacha of Wichita, KS, Tracy Ahrens of Middletown, Delaware, One Brother: Alan Hepler of Worcester, PA, One Sister: Helen Lohne of Melbourne, FL and Four Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his Father.
