Clyde William Oesterhaus, Sr., 82, of Dwight, passed away February 21, 2004 at Mercy Health Center, Manhattan. Visitation will be Tuesday, February 24, 2004, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel. Funeral service will be Wednesday, February 25, at 10:00 a.m. at Dwight United Methodist Church, with Rev. Larry Nabours officiating. Burial will be in Dwight Cemetery with military honors. Memorial contributions may be given to the Dwight United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 254, Dwight, KS 66849 and/or the American Legion Phillip Guard Post #289, Dwight, KS 66849.
He was born March 14, 1921, in Dickinson, County, the youngest child of William P. and Edith (Lawrence) Oesterhaus. He attended school in Chapman and was drafted into the Army during WWII. Clyde served as a Private First Class in the 11th Armored Division, Battery B 492d Armored Field Artillery Battalion and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. His awards include the WWII Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, EAME Theater Ribbon, and Three Bronze Service Stars.
Clyde married Mary Alice Berry December 22, 1947, in Junction City. They made Dwight their home, where he farmed and worked Civil Service at Fort Riley until he retired April 1, 1986. He received the Commanders Award for Civilian Service. Clyde had surgery for lung cancer in 1966, and was in remission. He was a member of the American Legion Phillip Guard Post #289 in Dwight, a life-long member of the Dwight United Methodist Church, and held various positions within the church.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Oesterhaus of Dwight; four children; Clyde Oesterhaus, Jr. and wife Laura of Dwight, Connie Oesterhaus of Topeka, Pamela Oesterhaus of Topeka, and Reginald Oesterhaus of Dwight; and his sister, Dorothy Leslie of Chapman.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Floyd Oesterhaus.
Pallbearers will be James Leslie, Gary Oesterhaus, Jeff Berry, Daniel Moler, Brad Champ, and Robert Moler.
Organist will be Marilyn Wells.
