Christa Elisabeth (Heda) Galbreath was born November 3, 1928 in Sandersleben, Germany to Alexander and Anna Heda.
She met James William Galbreath while he was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany where they married on June 2, 1966. James preceded her in death in 2013.
After being stationed at several different posts, the Galbreaths were assigned to Fort Riley in the spring of 1974. Christa and Jim purchased a house and made Junction City their permanent home.
She was never afraid of a challenge and often told stories of her adapting from life in Germany to life in America. She was self taught in many subjects, including her perfection of the English language.
She loved to tell of her adventures of learning to drive a car on the freeways of California. Christa's nurturing soul led her to a lifetime of caring for others. Prior to arriving in Junction City, she did housekeeping for military families in Germany and worked in a nursing home in California. After she arrived in Junction City she began a long career as a private housekeeper.
She held a fondness for all of the families she worked for and often considered herself one of the family. She was well known and loved for her excellent skills as a housekeeper. She was always a champion for Junction City and stayed up to date with current affairs. It was not uncommon for her to contact city officials to share her opinions on how to make the city better. Likewise she was a loyal friend to many and was always ready to offer support to anyone in need.
Through the years, Christa also demonstrated her love for animals by adopting many dogs and cats.
Christa passed away peacefully on May 10, 2016 at Valley View Senior Care with close friends Gery and Patti Schoenrock by her side. A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at 1 p.m. at the Kansas Veteran's Cemetery located at 5181 Wildcat Creek Road, Manhattan, KS 66503.
