Services for Charles N. Tates, Jr., 72, of Junction City, will be Thursday, December 11, 2003, 1:00 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel. Visitation will be Wednesday, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel. Burial will be at Fort Riley Cemetery with full military honors. Charles died at the Veterans Affairs Medical Hospital in Kansas City, MO on December 5, 2003.
Charles was born February 8, 1931 at Warrenton, VA to Charles N. and Mary Tates, Sr. Charles retired from the U S Army as SSGT after 20 years of service. During his tour of duty he served in Viet Nam. Following his military retirement he worked at Goad Motors as an auto mechanic and later on he worked in the linen department with Civil Service at Irwin Army Hospital, Fort Riley, KS retiring after 20 years. He married Maria Mueller December 20, 1955 in Germany, he had resided in Junction City since 1968.
He is survived by his wife; Maria of Junction City, one step-daughter; Edith Cohl of Germany, one brother; Walter A. Tates of Washington, D.C., one sister; Thelma Grigsby of Pittsburgh, PA and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
