Charles W. "Seven/Tuck" Sallis, 69, of Junction City, KS, transitioned home on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at Valley View Senior Life Center in Junction City, KS. A visitation will be held 3-5 p.m. Sunday, November 20, 2016 at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, 203 N. Washington Street. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, November 21, 2016, at New Church of the Living God, 1315 W. Ash Street in Junction City with Reverend James E. Johnson officiating. A graveside service with full military honors will follow the funeral service at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery. The family requests that the memorial contributions be given to the ALS Association.
Charles Sallis was born on November 22, 1946, Kosciusko, Mississippi to Thomas and Rosie (Grantham) Sallis. He graduated from Kosciusko High School and continued his education at the University of Nebraska in Omaha. He earned his degree in Physical Education and went on to teach in various schools in metro Omaha.
Charles Sallis served in the United States Army where he served in Vietnam. On November 8, 1978, he married Linda Morrow and moved to Fort Riley, KS. During this tour of duty, he served as a cook and legal clerk in the First Infantry Division. He was an expert in marksmanship. In 1980, they moved to Hanau, Germany and Charles became the Legal Clerk for the General. Charles later joined the National Guard where he served in Iraq and retired thereafter. Charles and Linda moved back to Fort Riley, KS in 1984 where he began his career as a trucker. Brother Sallis was a member of New Church of the Living God and earned the nickname "The Highway Poet" for the poetry he composed while working as a Long Distance truck driver. Charles enjoyed riding motorcycles and belonged to several motorcycle clubs. Some of his hobbies were sewing, cooking, gardening, carpentry, mechanics and traveling.
Charles is survived by his dedicated loving wife, Linda Sallis of the home. two daughters, Nikki Williams and her husband Clivel of Anchorage, AK, Keesha Sallis of Wichita, KS; two sons, Charles Sallis and his wife Kimberly of Houston, TX, Rodney Sallis of Clarksdale, MS; three sisters, Stella L Sallis-Wilder and her husband Freddie of Omaha, NE, Fannie L.Harris of Chicago, IL; two brothers, William T. Sallis and his wife Hattie Sallis of Hayti, MO, Benjamin F. Sallis and his wife Annette of Omaha, NE; five brother-in-laws, Clarence Flowers, Lee Chester Morrow, Sherman Morrow, John Williams and Lawrence Goldwire; ten sister-in-laws, Pamela Sallis, Vera Flowers, Vella Morrow, Rugenia Williams, Doris Morrow, Beatrice Morrow, Dorothy Morrow, Rochelle Morrow, Gurldine Morrow and Jacqueline Goldwire; twelve grandchildren and four great-granchildren; seventeen nieces, twenty seven nephews and a host of great nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and acquaintances.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Dorothy Sallis and Jean Cotton, twin brother, George Sallis, two brothers, Charles D. Sallis and Robert Sallis, brother-in-law, Robert Morrow, two nieces, two nephews.
