Charles Joseph Brown


Charles "Charlie" Joseph Brown, 62, of Junction City, passed away Nov. 22, 2003 at Valley View Professional Care Center. Visitation will be Tues., Nov. 25, 2003, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. rosary at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel. Funeral Service will be Wed., Nov. 26, 2003, 10:00 a.m. at St. Xavier Catholic Church, with Father Al Brungardt officiating. Burial will be in Fort Riley Cemetery with full military honors.

Charles was born Jan. 18, 1941, in Vermillion, SD, son of Raymond and Bernice (Manning) Brown. He graduated from Vermillion High School in 1959. Charles married Mary Gill Sept. 4, 1961; she survives of Junction City.

Charles served in the United States Army with two tours of duty in Vietnam. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 1 Silver and 1 Bronze Star, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Bronze Star Medal (1st OLC), Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Good Conduct Medal (6th Award), and the Meritorious Service Medal. Charles retired in March 1981 as a SFC. He then worked at Fort Riley National Bank for a year, Civil Service in the Finance and Accoutning Department for fourteen years, and Sunflower Bank for two years. Charles also worked part-time at Nardella's Liquor Store.

Survivors include wife; one son, Micahel Brown of Wellington, CO; two daughters, Teresa Wesoloski and Lori Leithoff both of Junction City; three sisters, Rosemary Mart of Vermillion, SD, Helen Sorensen of S. Sioux, NE, and Ann Schmeltzer of Whitewood, SD; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Pallbearers will be the Fort Riley Honor Guard.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Justin Wesoloski, Mike Kepka, Jason Wesoloski, Tony Macklin, Jeremy Leithoff, and Clinton Quintana.

Organist will be Ramona Printz Smith, and vocalist will be Brian Morris.
