Funeral services for E-9 (Ret) Sgt. Major Charles Douglas Mathis, 76, Junction City, KS will be 10 a.m., Thursday, July 10, 2008 at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, 203 N. Washington. Burial with full military honors will follow at Fort Riley Cemetery. Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 9, from 6-8 p.m. at the chapel. Retired Army Sgt. Major Charles Douglas Mathis, 76, of Junction City died Thursday, July 3, 2008 at his home in rural Junction City.
Sgt. Major Mathis was born February 4, 1932 in Chattanooga, Tennessee to Charles E. and Martha E. (Shutters) Mathis. He served in the U.S. Army for 24 years, serving in the Korean and Viet Nam wars before retiring at Fort Riley in January of 1978 and later retiring from the Junction City Inspection Department.
He was married to Erna Bauer on December 21, 1957, in Oppenheim, Germany.
He is survived by three daughters; Charlotte Landrith of Milford, KS, Laura Leis of Topeka, KS, and Clara Easterling of Wichita Falls, TX, one brother; Devon Mathis of Menlo, GA, six grandchildren; Aaron and Jarred Landrith, Clayton and Justin Leis, Eric and Melissa Easterling, and four great-grandchildren; Mickayla, Sierra, and Charlie Easterling and Ava Ford.
He was preceded in death by his wife, three brothers, and two sisters.
