Charles (Charlie) Caspar, Jr., 66, a well-known, respected, and much-liked Geary County farmer, who was proud to have farmed 50 years with his parents and brother, passed away Monday, May 28, 2007, of cancer.
Son to Charles Leo and Madeline Rieck Caspar (deceased); brother to Janice L. Kurtz, Margaret A. Richardson, and William O. Caspar (deceased); very loving uncle to John, Susan, Paul, Pamela, and Anne Kurtz; Merralena and Michaelana Richardson.
Charles graduated from St. Francis Xavier's High School in 1958. He graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in Agricultural Economics.
On January 20, 1970, Charles Caspar, Jr. was named The Junction City Jaycees Outstanding Young Farmer.
He was a member of 4-H, the Phi Kappa Theta fraternity, The Knights of Columbus, The Alida Coop, Chapman Young Farmers, and the Geary County Conservation Committee.
Charles was a lifelong learner of all subjects; and teacher to anyone lucky enough to be in his presence. Astronomy was a favorite subject. He was a hunter, fisherman, logger, and entrepreneur. A true renaissance man. Some of his businesses included Caspar Hardwood Products and Caspar Husqvarna.
After retiring from farming, he spent years gardening an abundance of produce, much of which he gave to freinds, family, and strangers. He always used his laid-back charm and quick wit to make those around him feel good.
The Caspar farming heritage began with Charles Caspar Jr.'s great-great-grandfather, John Caspar, who homesteaded in the Alida area. The tradidtion continued through his parents Charles Sr. and Madeline Rieck Caspar who first farmed in the Alida area, and later in the Lyon's Creek area south of Junction City after they were displaced by the Milford Lake Project.
Charles Caspar, Jr. was the last Caspar farmer to work the Kansas soil; he and all the Caspars certainly embodied the motto of our state, "Ad Astra Per Aspera." To the stars through difficulty.
Visitation will be held 7-9p.m. Thursday, May 31, at St. Francis Xavier Church, 218 N. Washington, Junction City, Kansas. Services will be held Friday, June 1, 1:00PM, at St. Francis Xavier Church with burial services to follow at St. Mary's Cemetery.
