Memorial Services for 1st Sgt. (retired) Charles "Chuck" Bickerstaff, 84, of Junction City will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, July 24, 2008 at Immanuel, 630 S. Eisenhower Dr., Junction City, KS. Graveside Services will be held at 2:00PM, Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at the Kansas Veteran's Cemetery at Wakeeney, KS. Visitation will be held from 6:00PM - 8:00 PM, Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel 203 N. Washington. Mr. Bickerstaff passed away Sunday, July 20, 2008 at Mercy Regional Hospital in Manhattan, KS. Memorials may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Church Lutheran School, 630 S. Eisenhower Dr., Junction City, KS 66441.
Born August 8, 1923 in Grant Town, West Virginia, Charles was the son of Martin and Hazel "Tennant" Bickerstaff. He graduated from Fairmont High School with the class of 1941. He married Rachel Dietz on May 16, 1945 at Olympia, Washington. His wife Rachel preceded him in death December 7, 2007. They moved to Junction City in May. 1966. Mr. Bickerstaff served 22 years in the US Army and served his country during WWII, Korea, and Viet Nam. In addition to 5 bronze stars , silver star, meritorious medal , he received other commendations. Upon retirement from the military, he was a salesman for Modern Woodman of America.
Mr. Bickerstaff was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and numerous civic organizations. He was a Hixson award recipient and past president of Noon Kiwanis, past commander of VFW, past commander of American Legion, and Salvation Army Advisory Board.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Martin Jr., Richard, and Roger.
Survivors include: his daughter Constance Sue Collins of Van, TX, his sons Charles Ludwig. , Dixon, IL and Henry Martin and his wife Harriet, Alva, OK
