Services for Ceola Mae Smothers, 80, of Junction City , KS will be held at the Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church, 212 N. Eisenhower,Monday, June 2, 2003, at 10:00 a.m. Pastor Levi Kickhaefer and Rev. J.L. Hagemeister will officiate. Mae died May 27, 2003 at Salina Regional Medical Center, Salina, KS. Visitation will be Sunday, June 1, 2003, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at Fort Riley Cemetery, Fort Riley, KS. Geary Community Education Foundation, c/o Leland Sharpe, 123 N. Eisenhower, Junction City, KS 66441. She was born May 17, 1923 at Montgomery, LA to Albert and Mary (Johnson) Paul. She married CSM (Ret) James A. Smothers, September 2, 1950, at Ft. Devens, MA, he preceded her in death April 3, 1989. Mae had been a resident of Junction City, KS since 1965, she was a homemaker. For many years she was a community leader. She was instrumental in forming the Waiting Wives Group during the Vietnam War. Her support of Fort Riley and its families was legendary. She volunteered with the Red Cross, the Junction City Pride
Organization. She served as a fund raising volunteer for the American Heart Association, Cancer Fund and the March of Dimes. She served as a board member for the Salvation Army, she prepared food baskets for distribution to needy families, was involved with the Geary County Posse and served as a block parent. She was the Past Worthy Matron of the St. Tabitha, Chapter #75 Order of Eastern Star, past Isis Commander of Oasis Court #44. Faithful member of the Faith Lutheran Church. Survivors: One Brother; Ishmell Paul of San Diego,CA and One Sister; Luvenia Simmons of Washington, D.C. Preceded In Death By: Parents, One Brother; Obediah Paul.
