Funeral Mass for Celestine "Celeste" D. Meis, 82, Junction City, KS will be held Wednesday, June 29, 2005, 10 a.m. at St. Xavier's Catholic Church with Father Al Brungardt officiating. Burial will follow at Fort Riley Post Cemetery. Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 28, 2005, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel with the parish rosary to be recited at 7:30 p.m. Mrs. Meis passed away peacefully June 26, 2005. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Xavier's Catholic Church, 218 N. Washington, Junction City, KS, 66441 or to the organization of the donor's choice.

Celeste was born at Sharon Springs, KS on December 10, 1922 to Charly Wm and Georgia Lee (Finey) Newland.

She was the third child and first daughter. She graduated from Sharon Springs Wallace County High School. She was a member of the girls basketball team

She married Sgt. Raymond C. Meis, from Weskan, KS on February 15, 1941 in Lawton,OK. They had two children, Constance (Connie) and Raymond (Bud) Meis, Jr.

The family lived in Sharon Springs, Logan, Hays, Hutchinson, and Junction City, Kansas along with Ft. Riley, Texas, Colorado, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Kyushu Japan, Nurnberg and Mainz, Germany and traveled to many other places. Ray and Celeste have lived in Junction City since Ray's retirement as a LTC in the U.S. Army. They have been married 64 years.

Celeste was a member of St. Xavier's Catholic Church, Circle Club. She worked at J.C. Penny's while her husband served in Vietnam.

Surviving her is husband Ray of the home, daughter Connie Meis-Willett of Newton, KS and Raymond Meis, Jr. and wife Rebecca of Overland Park, KS. Four granddaughters, Kimberlee and Steve Burghart, Halstead, KS; Gina and Dave Coffman, Topeka, KS; Heather and David King, Derby, KS and Michele and Scott Banks, Wichita. Twenty great-grandchildren. Two sisters, Verna Parker of CA and Helen Hanavan, Hutchinson, and many nephews and nieces.

Preceding her in death, a grandson Phil Willett in 1984, a great-granddaughter Marissa, Burghart in 2003, her parents, brothers Clifford and Lester, and a sister Bernice Miller.
