Carl L. Shell

November 17, 1925 — January 17, 2015

CSM Carl L. Shell (Ret), 89, of Newton, formerly of Junction City, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015 at the Newton Presbyterian Manor. Carl was born Nov. 17, 1925 at Steiman, VA, the son of Carl D. & Ida (Hughes) Shell. Carl graduated from Jenkins High School, in Jenkins, Kentucky.
Carl was a retired Command Sgt. Major in the U.S. Army, having served in WW II, where he fought in the Battle of The Bulge. Carl's military unit was a major factor in the liberation of Belgium and Luxembourg in WWII. He later served during the Korean War. Carl was awarded many medals during his military service, and was very proud to remain active with veteran's groups after his retirement. He enjoyed going to Washington D.C., as a member of the Honor Flight. After his military service, Carl was a school bus driver for Manhattan Public Schools.
Carl was a member of the Junction City Church of The Nazarene, a Past Master of Union Lodge #7, AF & AM, a 32 Degree Mason, the Earl C. Gormley, Post #45 of the American Legion, the Veteran's of the Battle of The Bulge, and was the past President of the Board of Director's of the Junction City Senior Center.
Carl married Katharina Woche on Nov. 18, 1954 in Frankfurt, Germany. She died Sept. 10, 2001. Carl later married Laura L. Tholin on Apr. 26, 2008 in Junction City. She survives. Other survivors include: a daughter, Katharina I. (Kitty) Gandy and her husband James, Temple, TX; 2 step-daughters, Lee Ann Mellinger and her husband Jerry, Newton, and Janice Tidd and her husband Martin, Grandview Plaza; 3 grandsons; 5 great grandchildren; 4 step-grandchilden; and 11 step-great grandchildren. Carl was preceded in death by a brother and 4 sisters.
Graveside service will be 2:00 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 22, 2015 at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery at Ft. Riley, with Pastor Enola Leonard presiding. Military Honors will be provided by the U.S. Army Honor Guard from Ft. Riley. The family will greet friends, Thursday, Jan. 22, 2015 from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Funeral Chapel, Junction City. Memorial contributions may be made to the Friends of Animals, sent in care of Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, 203 N. Washington, Junction City, KS 66441.
