SFC (RET) Buck William Irwin, 84, of Junction City, passed away on July 27, 2021 at Geary Community Hospital. Visitation will be held Monday, August 2, 2021, from 5:00 pm. to 7:00 pm. at Johnson Cremations, Funerals & Receptions. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday, August 3, 2021 at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery with military honors. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or to the American Diabetes Association.
He was born on November 10, 1936, Clute, TX to Robert W. and Pearl (Hudson) Irwin. Buck joined the U S Army August 1, 1958, he served in Vietnam and received the Combat Infantry Badge, Army Commendation Medal w/V Device, 1 OLC, Vietnam Service Medal w/four Bronze Service Stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Purple Heart, Presidential Unit Citation, Republic of Vietnam Civil Action Medal, First Class Meritorious Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross w/Palm, Bronze Star Medal, w/V Device, 1OLC, Good Conduct Medal, Five Awards. Buck retired from the Army September 1, 1978.
Following his retirement he worked for Steve's Auto Sales for a period of time as a car salesman. In 1982 he went to work for the Geary County Sheriff's Department as a Correction's Officer, he retired from there as Chief Jailer January 1, 2000. Buck was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan and also a fan of any Texas sports team. He loved to hunt and fish. He was a 38 year proud member of the Fraternal Order of The Eagles Aerie 830.
On February 2, 1965, Hutchinson, KS he married Glenda A. (Sutton) she preceded him in death April 12, 2010.
Buck is survived by three children, Patty Irwin, Sara (Wayne) Hoffman, Jr. Glen Irwin, all of Junction City, KS and Michelle Gomena of Halifax, VA; his special friend, Cathy Bolte of Manhattan, KS; five grandchildren, Johnathan Hensley, Lillie Washburn, Hunter Arsenault, Hattie Hoffman all of Junction City, KS and Brian Gomena of Topeka, KS; three great-grandchildren; two nephews, Edward Hale of Dallas, TX and Rick Hale of New Brunfels, TX and a great niece Anna Hale-Whistler of Arlington, TX.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Anna.
