Funeral services for Bobby L. Whitten, Sr., 76, of Junction City will be 10 a.m. Friday, May 19, 2006, at the Second Missionary Baptist Church with Reverend Leonard Gray and Reverend Lemuel Wynn officiating. Burial will follow the service with full military honors at Fort Riley Cemetery. Visitation for Mr. Whitten will be 6-8 p.m. tonight, at the Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel. Memorial contributions may be given to the American Cancer Society, left in care of the funeral home.
Mr. Whitten was born February 2, 1930, Macon, MS to Frank and Mary Jane (Gray) Whitten. He married Fannie Mae Vinson June 7, 1958, Ft. Leonardwood, MO, she preceded him in death October 19, 2001.
Bobby joined the U.S. Army March 1, 1951 and served for thirty years. While serving in the U.S. Army he received the National Defense Service Medal with the first Oak Leaf Cluster, Vietnam Service Medal with the Silver and Bronze Star, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, United Nation Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation (2nd Award), Republic of Vietnam Civil Actions Honor Medal, Bronze Star Medal with 1st Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal with 1st Oak Leaf Cluster and the Good Conduct Medal. Following his time in the service, he became a United Service Insurance Agent in Junction City for fifteen years.
Mr. Whitten was a member of the Kiwanis Club having served as the 1st Lieutenant Governor for District Division 4 of Kansas, Former County Commissioner, Democratic Precinct Committee Member, Past President of the Board of Directors of Open Door Homeless Shelter, Buffalo Soldier Monument President, Chairman of the Buffalo Soldier Committee, Past Board Member of the Flint Hills Area of Aging, Member of the Golf Course Advisor Committee of Rolling Meadows, Member of the VFW Post #8773, Member of the American Legion Post #45, NAACP Member, Past Grand Master of Prince Hall State of Kansas, Past Most Excellent Grand High Priest (Holy Royal Arch Mason) Prince Hall State of Kansas, Past Right Eminent Grand Commander (Knight's Templar) Prince Hall State of Kansas, Past Worthy Joshua (Heroines of Jericho), Past Grand Chief Engineer (Order of the Cyrenes), Past Illustrious Potentate of Oasis Temple # 29, Past Imperial Deputy of the Oasis (Shrine), Past Worthy Patron (OES St. Tabitha 75), Dual Member of AF & AM (State of Kansas) and was a 33rd Degree Mason.
Mr.Whitten was a member of the Second Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, Laymen Member, Mission Member, Chair person of the Trustee Board and was the past Treasurer for the Smokey Hill District.
Survivors include one son, Bobby G. Whitten of Junction City, one daughter, Eulisa White of Atlanta, GA and four grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Fort Riley Honor Guard
Honorary Pallbearers will be Walter Pinkney, Napoleon Kimrough, Aaron Berry, Jimmy Williams, Harrison Black and Albert Lacey.
