Beverly Lee (Riggs) Heronemus, 63, of Junction City, died Thursday morning, March 1, 2012, at home after a battle with lung cancer. Penwell-Gabel Johnson ChapelFuneral Home & Crematory, 203 N. Washington St.,Junction City, KS assisted the family with cremation. The family will conduct a simple memorial gathering for friends and family at 10 a.m. Friday, March 9, 2012, at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery on Wildcat Creek Road adjacent to Fort Riley.
Bev was born Sept. 14, 1948, in Delta, Colo., the daughter of Victor Jackson and Ethel Maud (Weis) Riggs. She lived much of her childhood in the Black Forest community near Colorado Springs, Colo.
She attended Air Academy High School on the U.S. Air Force Academy, where she met her future husband, Michael Lee Heronemus. They were married June 23, 1966, in the Black Forest after Mike had completed basic training. She followed him to Army assignments in Germany twice, to Japan, and to five different installations in the continental United States.
Bev was a homemaker devoted to caring for her children and supporting them in all their academic and extracurricular school activities, sporting events and youth organizations. She was an assistant leader for Camp Fire Girls and assisted with youth swimming, baseball, football, basketball and roller hockey teams.
While growing up, she loved horseback riding and had her own Pinto pony. As an adult, she loved crafting and quilting and won several ribbons at the Geary County Free Fair for her quilted projects.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her husband, of the home; two sons, Todd Heronemus of Weatherford, Texas, and Zachary (Megan) of Evansville, Ind.; a daughter, Jody (Richard) Norris of Yukon, Okla.; former daughter-in-law, Beth Heronemus of Weatherford; two brothers, Harold (Carol) Riggs of Oceanside, Calif., and Les (Johnneta) Riggs of Bossier City, La.; mother-in-law, Donna Heronemus of Tucson, Ariz.; a nephew, Brian Riggs of Colorado Springs, Colo.; former sister-in-law, Rose Kelly of Colorado; and six grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the Sunflower Quilters Guild in care of treasurer Wally Mitchell, 7111 Canyon Road, Junction City, KS 66441; the Junction City Ladies Reading Club Building Fund in care of Chris Munson, 3802 Liberty Hall Road, Junction City, KS 66441; or the 4-H/Senior Citizens Center Building Fund in care of the Geary County Extension Office, P.O.
