Bernice was the third child of Chester A. and Clara (Furrer) Mickey. She was born in Wakefield, Kansas, December 2, 1917.
Bernice and her siblings drove a horse and buggy to attend the Madura School. She graduated from Wakefield High School in 1935. On October 30, 1935 she married Norman Dibben. They were the parents of four children: Donald, David, Joyce, and Craig.
Bernice and Norman lived on various farms in Geary County. They survived the floods of 1947 and 1951 as well as the Grasshopper Invasion of 1938. To supplement their income after the '51 flood, she worked for Dr. Hargreaves, a podiatrist, and later for Farm Bureau. They became members of the First United Methodist Church of Junction City in 1948. Bernice was an active member of the United Methodist Women. They supported their children in 4-H. She and Norman traveled to England, Ireland, and Hawaii.
There were various hobbies involved of which many came from Bernice's experiences as a member of the Lyons Creek Extension Unit. She redid trunks, and made quilts for all the grandchildren. She knew how to garden, can and freeze food, embroider, crochet, play pitch, and was the fastest dish washer in the county. She loved to cook and made the best mashed potatoes according to one grandson.
After Norman's death in 1995, Bernice moved to the Bicentennial Manor. When her memory began fading, she moved to Alterra Sterling House and then to Valley View Senior Life Center.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; son David; her daughter Joyce and husband Don; two grandchildren, Matt and Kathleen Dibben; and a former daughter-in-law, Carole.
She is survived by son Donald and wife Joleen; son Craig and wife Susan; 11 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, 16 great-great-grandchildren, and one great-great-great-grandson.
