Bernard Lee Howard Sr, 82, of Manhattan, KS, was called home on Friday, January 22, 2016 at Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan. A funeral service will take place 11 a.m. Thursday, January 28, 2016, at the Second Missionary Baptist Church in Junction City, KS. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial with full military honors will take place following the services at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery near Manhattan, KS.
Bernard was born February 16, 1933, in Hamilton, OH the son of Bondrent and Mariah (Burns) Howard.
Bernard joined the United States Army. He served during the Korean Conflict. He retired from the Army in 1971. He later worked as a firefighter at Manhattan Regional Airport. Bernard owned and operated several business. His most popular business he owned was Hickory Inn Barbeque in Junction City. He was a member of the VFW Post # 8773 in Junction City and the American Legion Post in Ogden.
He married Bonnie Adams July 5, 2002. They were together for forty one years.
Survivors include two sons, Bernard Howard Jr. of Ogden, KS (Debra Jean) and Terence W. Adams of Lenexa, KS (Danette); three daughters, Loraine O. Howard of Sacramento, CA, Martina Y. Schomaker of Lawton, OK (Scott) and Latoya N. Mothershed of Manahttan, KS (Michael L.). He is survived by nine grandchildren, Bernard Howard III, Rainia Howard, Myria Howard, Ashley Adams, Terence Adams II, Alyssa Schomaker, Brayden Schomaker, Khegan Mothershed and Kainen Mothershed. Also survives in one great-grandchild, Xavier Adams. He is also survived by many nephews, nieces and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Mariah Nickson and Betty Thomas and one grandchild, Lucas Lee Howard.
