A Funeral service for Beatrice L. Meigs, 86, of Kansas City,
MO, formerly of Junction City, will be 11a.m., Monday, June 1, 2009 at Ward Chapel AME Church, 1711 N. Jefferson with Pastor Viola Jones officiating. Burial will follow at Fort Riley Post Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8pm Sunday, May 31, 2009 at Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel, 805 Caroline Avenue. Mrs. Meigs passed away May 26, 2009 in Raytown, MO. Memorial contributions may be made in Beatrice's name and may be sent to or left in care of Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel.
Beatrice was born on June 30, 1922 in Council Grove, Kansas to Ethelyn Broils Johnson and William Johnson. She attended public school in Council Grove and obtained her GED in Geary County, She was sixteen years of age when she moved from Council Grove to Junction City.
On August 3, 1940 she was united in Holy Matrimony to James P. Meigs, Jr. (J.P)They were married for 65 wonderful years and from that union one child (Jimmy) was born. She and her husband over the years had been foster parents to several children.
She was a dedicated and faithful member of Ward Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church of Junction City of which she was a member for over sixty years. She served as a trustee for many years and at her passing she was trustee emeritus. She was also a member of the Arry Williams Women's Missionary Society. She was a willing worker and served tirelessly on numerous projects undertaken by her Church. In years past she worked in the Junction City Middle School Cafeteria as a cook. She was a caring and loving person who will be greatly missed by all who knew her over the years.
Her husband James P. Meigs, Jr. (J.P.), her parents, one sister Mary Lou White and one brother James (Sonny) Johnson preceded her in death.
She leaves to celebrate her life: Son Jimmy (Shirley) Meigs of Kansas City, Missouri, Granddaughters; Vanessa (David) Bronson, San Antonio, TX; Arnetha (Ahmed) Salaam, Sumter, SC; Jeanette Orr, Lithia Springs, GA; Grandson, victor Jordan, Kansas City, MO; Seven great-grandchildren, seven foster children, a host of nieces, and nephews and many friends.
