Aurelio Manuel Belardo, 69, of Junction City, passed away on August 14, 2017. A graveside service is scheduled for Friday, September 29, 1:00pm at Highland Cemetery in Junction City, KS. A celebration of Life will take place after the graveside service at the American Legion Post #45, 201 E. 4th St, Junction City, KS. Memorials may be sent to the Junction City Friends of Animals c/o Junction City Animal Shelter.
Aurelio M. (Joe) Belardo was born on January 20, 1948, Brooklyn, New York to Aurelio and Anna (Santana) Belardo. After graduating from Automotive High School, Brooklyn, NY in 1965 he worked for Clark Equipment Company.
He joined the Army in 1967. He spent 21 plus years in the Army, retiring with the rank of First Sergeant. His last duty assignment was Command Sergeant Major of the 541st Maintenance Battalion DS/GS, Fort Riley, Kansas. While in the military he graduated from 7th Special Forces NCO Academy in the Panama Canal Zone; took an advanced course of NCOES, Aberdeen Maryland; and the Noncommissioned Officers Logistics Management Program.
He then began a career in the financial service field. He started with MetLife Military Service office in Junction City, KS. During his time in the financial services area he attended the National Association of Life Underwriters, graduating as a fellow, and the Fraternal Life Insurance Course and held a FIC designation. He then joined Modern Woodmen of America (MWA) as District Representative, Agent, and Camp Secretary. During his tenure with MWA he was instrumental in raising over $200,000.00 for individuals and organizations in need in the Junction City/Geary County area. He conducted bicycle safety programs in conjunction with the Junction City Police Department, donated educational materials throughout USD 475. He organized home repair, clean up, and building projects with MWA's Good Neighbor program. Annually he organized donation for the Animal Shelter and the Food Pantry through the MWA tree planting program he organized the donations and planting of trees throughout Junction City.
He suffered from COPD in 2005 and in June 2012 he could not continue at his normal pace and was forced to slow down and eventually retire.
Aurelio also served on the Junction City Mayor's Budget review committee, Eastern Kansas Economic Development Committee and the Geary County Junction City Economic Development Committee.
He was a Life Member of VFW post 8773 where he served on the House Committee Life member of American Legion Post 45 serving as Commander, Chaplain and Chaplain for the 4th District Department of Kansas. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 16 where he served as Commander. He also served as Aumonier and Director of Nurses Training for Voiture 1029 of the 40/8.
Over the years, he furthered his education by attending Florida State University, Central Texas College, City Colleges of Chicago, Cloud County Community College, and St. Luke's Bible College. Aureilo was an ordained Reverend and served as the English Pastor of the Grace Korean American Baptist Church in Junction City.
He married Lisa M. Gustafson on January 30, 1984. She survives him along with their two sons, Patrick of Junction City, KS and Anthony, and his wife Billie, of Schoenchen, KS. He is also survived by his sister, Elsie Schoreder of Florida, and a multiple of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Alice Pfieffer, Gladys Rojas, and Barbara Hernandez, and one son from a previous relationship.
