Mrs. Arbutus "Arby" L. York, 99, of Junction City, passed away on March 4, 2014 at Geary Community Hospital. Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 10, 2014, 1:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Pastor Laurie Barnes officiating. Burial will follow at Lyona Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, March 9, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, 203 N. Washington Street. Memorial contributions have been designated to the First United Methodist Church, 804 N. Jefferson, Junction City, KS 66441.
Arby was born on July 14, 1914, in Lyona, Kansas to John and Hulda E. (Staatz) Schultz. On August 18, 1936 she married Marvin York, and they lived in Junction City, KS. He preceded her in death on July 4, 1991.
Marvin volunteered to serve in the Navy during World War II and was stationed in San Francisco. Arby moved to San Francisco on a troop train, with her two young daughters, in order to be with him during his service. Arby was the Founder and Pre-School Administrator/Teacher at First United Methodist Church for over 40 years, and she was a devoted member of the church. She was also a member of the local Ladies' Reading Club for many years.
Arby was a skilled seamstress and loved quilting. She made a quilt for each of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved to cook for her family and hosted many holiday gatherings.
She is survived by her daughters: Sharolyn Taylor of Junction City, KS; Karen Dickey (William) of Parker, CO; Marla Mullin (Jerry) of Lenexa, KS; and her son, David York of Junction City, KS. She is also survived by her sister, Wiladene Janke of Junction City, KS; eight grandchildren, Lenny Mullin, Jason Mullin, William Dickey, Matthew Dickey, Patrick Dickey, Diane Dickerson, Melanie Cooper, and Kristin Varela; and twelve great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Vera York and LaBerta Trafton, and two brothers, Oscar and John Shultz.
