A Mass of Christian burial for Anna Margareta "Margaret" Bruning, 77 of Junction City, will be Friday, May 27, 2011 at 2:00 pm at St. Xavier's Catholic Church with Father Al Brungardt officiating. Cremation will follow, with inurnment at a later date at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, May 26, 2011 from 6-8 pm with a vigil service at 7:30 pm at the Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt Chapel, 805 Caroline Ave. Mrs. Bruning passed away on May 24, 2011 at Geary Community Hospital. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Susan G. Komen for the Cure and or The Friends of Animals, c/o Penwell-Gabel Mass-Hinitt.
Margaret was born January 31, 1934 in Dankenfeld, Germany to Josef and Maria (Baumann) Durr, where she attend elementary, trade schools and worked for Porsche until she immigrated to the United States in 1960 for a job in New York City. She then returned back to Germany where she met Marvin "Gene" Bruning and they were married on March 5, 1965 in Bamberg, Germany.
Margaret and Gene made Fort Riley, KS their home in 1974. While at Fort Riley she worked for the commissary, for 18 years, then Kansas State University for 9 years and retired. Margaret decided she wasn't ready for retirement and attended Manhattan Technical College in 1990 and received her degree as a CNA and also attended Barton Community College and received her HHA degree. She was a home health aid for the elderly until about 3 years ago. She was a member of St. Xavier Catholic Church, German American Club and the Walla Walla Club. She enjoyed her grandchildren, gardening and loved to travel.
She is survived by a son; Gene Bruning and his wife Tammy of Junction City, two daughters; Josephine "Fina" Nett and her husband Jeff of Tuttle, OK and Karin Searles and her husband Richard of Milford. A sister; Elsa Schweltzer of Stuttgart, Germany. Seven grandchildren; Ricky Searles, Crystal Searles, Jacob Nett, Gage Nett, Ashley Ingram, Ozzy Adney, Bishop Bruning. Margaret was going to have her first great-grandchild in October. A Sister-in-Law and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
Margaret is preceded in death by her parents, a daughter Marcella Bruning and a brother Willie Durr.
