Alvin "Al" Junghans, 99, a lifelong resident of Junction City, was called home to his Lord Wednesday, December 1, 2010. Funeral services will be Saturday, December 4, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, 630 S. Eisenhower Dr. with Pastor Marty Schlossman officiating. A private family burial will be held prior to the service at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday, December 3, 2010 at the Penwell-Gabel Johnson Chapel, 203 N. Washington St., from 2-8 pm with family present from 6-8pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Church, 630 S. Al was born to Fredrick Junghans and Caroline Stubenberg Junghans of Clarks Creek in eastern Geary County in 1911. He and his brothers farmed their parents' farm during the late 1920's and 1930's. In 1941, Al entered military service with the 2nd Horse Cavalry Regiment at Fort Riley. When the regiment was deactivated, he became a member of the 19th Tank Battalion of the 9th Armored Division. He served in the European Theatre during World War II and was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium in 1945. During his recovery, he returned to Junction City, where he married Maxine Ascher in 1947 and worked as parts manager for the Hudson Motor Company. In 1953, Al founded the Junghans Real Estate and Insurance Agency, from which he retired in 1976. He was a member of national, state, and local real estate boards, the American Legion, and Disabled American Veterans. Al was a devoted member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, where he served as an elder and in various capacities.
Al is survived by his wife Maxine, his children, and his grandchildren: Gary Junghans, his wife LaDonna, and their two sons Clint and his wife Alyson and Matt, all of Junction City; Marsha Junghans Maurer and her husband Michael of Augusta, Georgia; Jolene Stackhouse, her husband Earl of Junction City, and their son Sean of Moore, Oklahoma; and Lesa Junghans Kendus and her husband Stephen of Junction City. He is also survived by one great-grandson, Seth of Moore, Oklahoma.
Al was preceded in death by his parents, by his brothers Norbert, Helmer, Riney, his twin brother Ed, and his sister Irene.
